Starting a Business: From Concept to Reality

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) defines a small business as an independent business having fewer than 500 employees.  Their research found that small businesses represent 99.7 percent of all employer firms, employ about half of all private sector employees, pay more than 45 percent of total U.S. private payroll and have generated 60 to 80 percent of net new jobs annually over the last decade.

Their statistics show that two-thirds of new businesse's survive at least two years with 44 percent surviving at least four years. They noted that some of the major factors in a new businesses success include an ample supply of capital, the owner’s education level, and the owner’s reason for starting their business in the first place, such as freedom for family life or wanting to be one’s own boss
